Parole Reentry Court
The
Harlem Parole Reentry Court helps individuals returning from prison manage the
transition from confinement to the community with the oversight of an
administrative law judge, the supervision of a parole officer, and clinical
interventions by community court staff. Together, Reentry Court staff address
clients ‘stabilization needs and the thinking and
behavior that has resulted in the client’s
incarceration. The program also seeks to improve the participant’s relationship with the justice system by increasing the
transparency of the parole process and fostering a positive relationship with a
judicial figure. The Reentry Court maintains strong partnerships with local
community providers who frequently visit the court to meet with court staff and
conduct intakes with Reentry Court participants.
With
support from the JC Flowers Foundation, the Harlem Community Justice Center, in
collaboration with the Interfaith Center of New York, recently launched the
Reentry Family and Faith Circles of Support, a two-year initiative that seeks
to support young adults and their families, as they reunite post-incarceration
and face the challenges of reentry.
Harlem congregations and houses of worship are invited to engage parolees and their families in family-oriented activities, services, and referrals to provide them with a smoother return to
society.
